Make Beautiful Choices, not “Right” Choices

“You are not your body and hair style, but your capacity for choosing well. If your choices are beautiful, so too will you be.” -Epictetus

I love this idea. That we should be trying to make beautiful choices rather than “right” ones.

I think shifting focus from correctness to beauty and goodness can help us to see opportunities for choice we may otherwise miss.

If I think about the “right” decisions I can make during my day, I tend to feel like there are just a few: As long as I brush my teeth and exercise and get to work on time and eat well, I’ve made the right choices.

But when we look for the opportunity to make beautiful choices, we find that we have so many choices throughout the day. Our perspective and action every single moment is a choice.

Beautiful choices like not wearing my headphones on my run last night and later, deciding to turn the tv off (thank you Michael) and playing music instead, like waking up to meditate first thing in the morning, like smiling at people I pass on my way to work even though they usually don’t smile back. . . Like not fretting about my hair. Except I do. Working on it. 🧘🏼‍♀️
